Who’s policing Craigslist?
Last week, an Oregon man arrived home to find strangers walking away with all his belongings after someone placed an ad claiming he was moving, and everything was free for the taking.
“Brooms, buckets, saddles, wood chippers, cutters … at one point a horse was taken,” said Lt. Richard Fogarty of the Jackson Co. Sheriff’s Dept.
Police have tracked down the computer they believe was used to post the ad.
The incident is similar to what happened to Laurie Ray of Tacoma after her niece’s Craigslist ad triggered a raid on Ray’s house. Everything from the front window to the kitchen sink was stripped from the home.
So is anyone policing sites like Craigslist to make sure things like this aren’t happening?
“For the most part these sites self-patrol,” said Kristin Alexander of the Washington State Attorney General’s Office. “When they find somebody has put on an ad or a statement that does not apply to their own policies, for example, it’s indecent, it’s a lie, it’s flat out illegal, they pull it. But, of course, they have hundreds of thousands of people on there. It can be difficult to pull on a regular basis.”
A spokesperson for Craigslist says site administrators are always eager to help police solve crimes.
“Craigslist is an extremely unwise choice for committing crime, since criminals inevitably leave an electronic trail to themselves that law enforcement officers will follow,” said Susan MacTavish Best, Craigslist spokeswoman.
In the end, the best line of defense for users is judgment, not just to protecting yourself from a crime, but to making sure you’re not committing one.
“Because if you’re one of these people who’s actually taking property that doesn’t belong to you because you saw this web posting, you’re stealing,” said Alexander.
The law states sites like Craigslist are not liable for criminal activity that happens as a result of postings on their sites.
It’s generally up to the users of a site to report another user who is committing illegal activity.
