Sex-change law questions arise after Bend man says he’s pregnant

Thousands of years Oregonians change their names. But the case of a Bend resident, who said he is legally male and five months of pregnancy was much smaller numbers, the legal change of gender.

This option is available in Oregon, as in most countries, for transsexuals, switches genders.

“Law of Oregon is very typical,” said Shannon Minter, legislative director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights in San Francisco.

The core of the old law for decades, is a single sentence. The same court has jurisdiction over the statutory changes name “in May for an amendment to the law on sex and give you a stop indication, the change of sex of a person, whose sex has been changed from the surgical procedure .

The law does not define “surgical” or specify the type of anatomical changes, if any, is required.

“There is no specific provision in the law, it is a letter from a surgeon,” said James Lake Perriguey, Portland, as a lawyer specializes in cases of sex discrimination. “A judge may, in order to live a letter, but that’s all.”

Perriguey said, it can take up to 10 Sex right to modify cases per year. It always includes a surgeon of writing documentation, such as sex change. He said he knew of instances in which a change in the law a person of gender on the basis of the reconstruction of the face.

The high-profile case involves Bend Beatie Thomas, who said he was born, but identifying women than men.

In a first-person account this month in The Advocate, a homosexual publication, Beatie said, he legally changed her name and gender of more than 10 years in Hawaii. It Having a double mastectomy and began injections of testosterone, he says, but more and more female of the law.

A few years ago, after moving to Oregon, Beatie said he and his wife, Nancy, decided to have a child. Because Nancy could not understand, Beatie The Advocate testosterone he said, to allow his new round, and was pregnant by artificial insemination.

Nobody knows how many people, who reside legally change their sex, “said Minter, legal director for the rights lesbians. “It’s a very small population.”

Perriguey said, it would be very unusual for a person to change their sex legal rights, or obtain financial benefits, such as health coverage through a spouse.

“There may be a few, who are trying,” he says, “but if people decide to live as another gender, it is not for security.”

Beatie went on issues of The Oregonian this week, who said he had an exclusive contract with another media outlet. But the lawyer spoke with Beatie several times before publication, and insisted on a meeting with the birth of her gynaecologist aid in the verification of the pregnancy and other medical data, assistant editor Rachel has Dowd told The Oregonian.

“We had a number of questions,” she said. “Pregnancy - it was great.”

Beatie is not the first boy corporation, to be pregnant, she said. “But for whatever reason, it is moving.”
