Beavers’ Nickerson Named College World Series’ Most Outstanding Player
After pitching in three games in eight days, Jonah Nickerson was named Most Outstanding Player in the College World Series.
Nickerson logged 21 1-3 innings, giving up 12 hits and four runs.
“To come back wasn’t too challenging to me,” the junior right-hander said. “I just had to put the tiredness in the back of my head.”
A seventh-round pick of the Detroit Tigers, Nickerson pitched 6 2-3 innings in Monday night’s 3-2 title-clinching victory over North Carolina. He allowed six hits and struck out seven.
“I think the heart really showed for this team, fighting back,” Nickerson said. “You couldn’t ask for any more.”
The Beavers did fight back - six times. They lost 11-1 to Miami in their opening game in Omaha. Oregon State then won four straight to earn a spot in the championship series. After losing Game 1 on Saturday, they staved off elimination twice more, in large part because of Nickerson.
“The MVP is a great bonus,” Nickerson said. “Without this team I’m not even going to be recognized for this trophy. But it feels great to get this honor.”
